Utica’s Famous Half Moon Cookies

Half moon cookies are famous around the world, but they actually originated right here in Utica, NY back in the 20th century. Around the world, these traditionally half black and half white cookies are called a number of different names. In New York city, they’re called black & white cookies. In Germany, they are called Amerikaneers. But Utica, NY hangs tight to the name half moon cookies.

Holland Farms, right here in Utica, has its own variations on the traditional way to make these cookies. They offer the traditional half vanilla/half chocolate frosting cookie, they offer cookies for special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, which would have a red frosting as a base, they even offer a carrot cookie with chocolate and vanilla cream cheese frosting and much more!

Utica’s position in the northeastern United States has allowed the mesh of cultures and traditions. The city shares characteristics, traditions and cuisines with other refugee cuisines as well as their own traditional staple foods including chicken riggies, Utica greens, half-moons and tomato pie. The city is also a melting pot of immigrant and refugee cuisines, including, Italian, German, Irish, Asian and Bosnian. Other popular dishes include upside-down pizza from the family owned local pizzeria, O’scugnizzo’s, sausage and peppers, and delicious pastries.

Along with the famous food Utica has to offer, nothing amounts to the variety of ma and pa  restaurants and cultured cuisines available. From Italian steak houses, to Bosnian cafes, to breakfast diners, and ice cream shoppes there’s some where new to go every night of the week.

The Whitney

My name is The Whitney Morris and I am currently a junior at Utica College. My recently declared major is Public Relations & Journalism. Prior to that, I was a Broadcast Journalism major for two years. I observed my passion for writing while I was in high school and started out by writing songs, poetry and even started writing my own book. As I transitioned from high school to college, my writing became more academic/professional focused. Nonetheless, I have managed to acquire a balance between freestyle and academic writing while maintaining my passion for writing overall. I will be covering the food section on the website.
